MCS formed a Diversity Committee in 1996 with the goal of increasing diversity in the student and teacher populations. The committee meets monthly and the meetings are open to all parents and staff.
The current work of the committee has expanded to include school wide events, including “Pajama Stories”, where children and parents come to the school in their pj’s for in-class readings of books and poems that raise significant issues about race, culture, gender, and religion. The group organizes at least one pot-luck international picnic per year. In the winter, the committee sponsors the Festival of Lights, which is a celebration of world cultures.
Annually the group organizes at least one session of Conversations on Race (COR) to be held at the Co-op. COR is the renowned discussion group founded in Montclair many years ago to facilitate discussion about race among people from varied backgrounds and races.
Most important, teachers are a part of the committee, and, together with parents, they work on curriculum enrichment. The Head of School and the admissions director work closely with the Diversity Committee to strengthen recruitment and retention.
