Montclair Cooperative School is celebrating literacy with our annual Book Fair and Artisan Market. Plan to join us on Friday, November 11th from 12:30pm - 4:30pm and Saturday, November 12th from 9:00am - 4:30pm. Once again we are thrilled to be partnering with our community bookstore, Watchung Booksellers, to deliver a fun-filled event that will include the Book Fair, hand made items from local artisans, and the wonderful home cooked treats and snacks of the Bookworm Café. On Wednesday, October 5, Dawne Weaver, Director of Auxiliary Programs, and Debbie Harner, Art Teacher, at Montclair Cooperative School, received the Young Audiences Arts Champion Award from Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania, the region’s largest art education organization, providing high-quality performances and artist-in-residence programs to schools in the area. Field trips and hands-on learning are an essential part of our academic curricula and our social curriculum at all grade levels. Here’s just a sample of the experiences Co-op students have had this September to facilitate their learning. Early Ages Butterfly Study Our Early Ages classes began the school year by watching Monarch butterfly caterpillars munching away on their milkweed leaves. They watched then as the caterpillars transformed themselves into their gold-flecked cocoons and finally into Monarch butterflies. They ended the month by watching the Monarchs fly away. Our seventh and eighth grade students were very busy since last June. As part of their summer work and in preparation for their Global Issues theme study, they designed business plans and set financial goals for their own individual fundraisers for Heifer International. 7th graders Kaie and Julianna's yard sale. The array of fundraising ideas, actions and outcomes was impressive and very creative. Last Sunday, May 22nd, the Montclair Cooperative School hosted an Open Chess Tournament (Grades 1-8) at its campus (65 Chestnut St., Montclair). The tournament was co-directed by Mike Somers and Steve Moctezuma. Overall top place section winners received trophies, and winners within each respective grade group received ribbons. Overall top place trophy winners in the first-grade through third-grade section were: Alex Crespo, first place; Sam Chikvashvili, second place; and Isabella Vitale, third place.
