Last Sunday, May 22nd, the Montclair Cooperative School hosted an Open Chess Tournament (Grades 1-8) at its campus (65 Chestnut St., Montclair). The tournament was co-directed by Mike Somers and Steve Moctezuma. Overall top place section winners received trophies, and winners within each respective grade group received ribbons.
Overall top place trophy winners in the first-grade through third-grade section were: Alex Crespo, first place; Sam Chikvashvili, second place; and Isabella Vitale, third place.
Overall top place trophy winners in the fourth through eighth-grade section were: Luka Loncar, first place; John Ashworth, second place; and Enzo Whetton, third place.
In the first-grade group, ribbon winners were: Carter Convey, first place; Cash Loncar, second place; and Charlie Fisher, third place.
In the second-grade group, Sol Demefack received a first place ribbon, and Adrian Bergstrom-Shaw received a second place ribbon.
Fourth-grade group ribbon winners were Dashell Day-McLeod, first place, and Collin Geller-Pak, second place.
In the fifth-grade group, the ribbon winners were: Elliot Albright, first place; Matthew Schnur, second place; and Harry James, third place.
In the sixth-grade group, Max Waitz received a first place ribbon.
