Camp Co-op at the Montclair Cooperative School is a 5-week summer program for children ages 3 to 6. In its thirteenth year, Camp Co-op offers themed weeks during which children explore and learn through art projects, puzzles, games, science, literature, songs, movement, and many other fun activities. Outside play is plentiful, including water, tennis, bikes, and games. Our counselor-to-camper ratio is a low 1:5 so we can get to know the children and keep them safe, happy, and engaged.
Camp Co-op is in session for 5 weeks beginning June 26th. It runs from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, 5 days a week.
- Week 1 (Pirates): June 26 – June 30
- Week 2 (America): July 3 – July 7 (4 day week)
- Week 3 (Machines): July 10 – July 14
- Week 4 (Space): July 17 – July 21
- Week 5 (Dinosaurs): July 24 – July 28
Fee is $275 per week. Fourth of July – prorated week $220. Two-week minimum sign-up suggested. Children enrolled for four or more weeks will receive a $100 discount for the season.
The camp is situated on the grounds of the Montclair Cooperative School at 65 Chestnut Street, an independent, coeducational school enrolling children from nursery through eighth grade. MCS Kindergarten teacher Hilary Fandel will again be heading the program. Our inside activities are held in the school’s spacious Annex building, and our outside play in its back playground.
We encourage families to sign up for two weeks or more so the children can establish relationships with one another and their counselors. Students enrolled for 4 or more weeks will receive a $100.00 discount for the season.
A typical day involves:
- Table/rug work, art projects, activities
- Wash hands
- Prepare for outdoors
- Outside play (water, tennis, bikes, games)
- Change clothes/wash hands
Every Thursday (if the weather permits) we will be walking down to Rainbow Park to have a picnic lunch and play in the playground before pick-up. So if we are not at the Co-op Annex when you come to pick your child up, we will be arriving shortly from the park!

In addition to playing chess in a friendly setting, campers can play other enjoyable board games, puzzles, and outdoor activities.
Chess Camp Director Steve Moctezuma has conducted summer camps and chess enrichment classes for many years in public and private schools (including the Montclair Cooperative School).
