The Montclair Cooperative School seeks a full time Assistant Head of School to begin in July 2019.

About the School

The Montclair Cooperative School is an independent nursery through eighth grade school founded in 1963 and located in Montclair, NJ. We have an enrollment of 170 students, a program that is progressive and a community that is highly collaborative.


The Assistant Head is a highly visible community leader who works closely with the Head of School to oversee the wellbeing of the school and its community.  The Assistant Head of School reflects the school’s progressive approach to education at all times and moves the school’s administrative and educational initiatives forward through implementation and follow up.

The Assistant Head of School reports directly to the Head of School and is a member of the senior administrative team comprised of the Business Manager, the Director of Admissions, the Director of Development and the Director of Technology. The Assistant Head of School is directly responsible for many aspects of school operations including but not limited to: our substitute teacher system, the mentoring and supervision of assistant teachers, overseeing the after school and summer camp programs, and supporting students and teachers with behavioral expectations.  The Assistant Head of School also collaborates as needed with Admissions and Enrollment efforts; collaborates with teachers and Head of School on professional learning initiatives and curriculum innovation; provides follow up and follow through for specific pedagogy or curriculum goals individualized for teachers; assists the
Head of School with teacher performance review as delegated; is responsible for daily operations in the absence of the Head of School, and represents the school on occasion in the wider educational community, and any other project or duty as assigned by the Head of School.


The ideal Assistant Head of School has extensive teaching experience in a project-based environment and progressive educational philosophy, a master’s degree in education, and skills for collaborating with faculty and guiding students.   The ideal candidate also can demonstrate the following abilities: ability to coach, supervise and motivate teachers; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills; the flexibility to work well with faculty, administrators, parents, and students; enthusiasm, creativity and resourcefulness; and a self-motivated work ethic.
