Fostering Curiosity Through Nature Journaling

Fostering Curiosity Through Nature Journaling

Last fall, Upper School Science Teacher Heather, and Upper School Art Teacher participated in a Nature Journaling workshop at the New Jersey School of Conservation in Sandyston, NJ. Inspired by the process, Dawne had 7th and 8th graders create their own Nature Journals by binding drawing paper with waxed linen thread. Students are putting them to good use!Nature Journaling is about recording observations—an essential skill in both art and science. Each entry requires a mix of writing, drawing, and measurements, guiding students to answer key questions: What do you notice? What do you wonder? What does it remind you of? This process sharpens their observational skills, fosters curiosity, and encourages critical thinking.

Beyond academics, Nature Journaling also helps students slow down, engage their senses, and develop a deeper connection with the natural world. It nurtures both inquiry and creativity while fostering empathy toward nature—helping shape responsible future stewards of our planet.

Heather and Dawne plan to revisit these journals throughout the year, and students will continue adding to them until they graduate. Over time, their journals will become a personal record of discovery, reflection, and growth.
