Peek Inside the Innovation Lab!

Peek Inside the Innovation Lab!

We are inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s belief that “To develop a complete mind: Study the science of art; Study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.” In the Lab, our students are learning to observe, analyze, and communicate about the world around them through both creative and scientific lenses. Guided by our art and science teachers, students are exploring phenomena—this year, 7th and 8th graders began the year studying data visualization, discovering how to transform scientific information into compelling visual stories. Meanwhile, our 6th graders have been experimenting with light and reflection, using mirrors and materials to understand perception, optics, and artistic expression. In the photos here you can see mirror room exploration and mirror room work in progress with glass marbles.

Now, we’re taking on our most ambitious project yet: merging the art of architecture with the science of sustainability! Students will start by studying animal homes and investigating what makes a shelter functional, efficient, harmonious with its environment, and beautiful. They’ll explore climate-based architecture and sustainable design before creating their own small-scale models of eco-friendly homes. These models will be combined into a thoughtful, sustainable community design—one of which will be chosen for eventual full-scale construction by students on our school playground! As they build, students will learn real-world construction skills, adapted to the materials and techniques they have chosen for sustainability. Once completed, this tiny house will serve as both a living model of sustainable architecture and a playhouse for our youngest students. We can’t wait to see how our students’ creativity and problem-solving come together in this hands-on, real-world challenge!
