First Graders Host 3D Geometry Conference!

First Grade mathematicians opened their classroom to host the 2nd Annual 1st Grade 3D Geometry Conference! Families came to learn about the hands-on explorations we did to name shapes and identify them based on their attributes. They synthesized their knowledge by drawing a plan for a sculpture made from 3D shapes, building it, and collecting/representing data about the shapes used. Mathematicians first shared with their families, then shared their work with the whole group. After our sharing, it was time for the parents to show their stuff! The children gently knocked down their sculptures and the parents had to rebuild based on the plans and photographs. Families then worked together – parents and child – to build a new sculpture. Many thanks to our families for supporting our work, and the mathematicians for their deep thinking on 3D shapes!
